With its almost 200-year history, a stay at the Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya is like stepping back in time. This National Heritage property, which began its life as the home of Sir Edward Barnes – a former governor of the island – is packed with original features that reflect its past. Over the years, the former Barnes Hall has been added to, renovated and upgraded so that today is one of the most characterful, history-rich properties in Sri Lanka. Restaurants & Bars
There are flavours from around the world at The Grand’s six restaurants, from sophisticated Thai to just-grilled Middle Eastern dishes. Choose from the Barnes Hall, the Grand Indian, the Grand Thai, the Fusion Grill, The Magnolia as well as the Tea Lounge and Coffee Bar. You can even have a private dinner in the house's former boiler room or the Grand Laundry!
Meal Plan
You have a few options to choose from when it comes to the meal plans at The Grand Hotel. These options are Bed & Breakfast only, if you fancy eating out most of the time and Half Board or Full Board, if you think you'll be spending more time at the hotel. The Grand Hotel also offers Full Board Plus which included High Tea at the Tea Lounge. You can decide on what works for you and the team will be more than happy to accommodate.
Spa & Wellness
The small Grand Spa in the Mindfulness Studio has a curated menu of wellness therapies drawn from traditional Balinese practices. We recommend one of the massages, where only natural products made in Sri Lanka are used. Morning yoga classes and evening music therapy sessions with skilled practitioners can be arranged. The Mindfulness Studio is also home to a large, modern gym equipped with Cybex cardio and weight machines, and has views out over the gardens.
Rooms
There are 154 rooms at The Grand Hotel, all with a classic style and neutral decor. The rooms all have stunning views of the surrounding gardens, with the Golf Wing overlooking the neighbouring Nuwara Eliya Golf Club. Some rooms also have a separate living room complete with a butler service, fireplaces and king-sized beds.
