West Coast 2024 & 2025 INDIAN OCEAN | SRI LANKA

Venturing along the western coastline of Sri Lanka is a region full of tradition, modernity and a wide variety of experiences for you to explore. Here you will find the country's capital city of Colombo, a real mixing pot of different cultures, making it into the fantastic capital it is.

Further inland is home to ancient temples, lakes and luscious greenery which provides a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle. You can discover the sacred Buddhist temple, Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, or meander through the grounds of Viharamahadevi Park.

And for the foodies, this is the place to be. The west coast is a gastronomic delight, showcasing flavours from all around the world. You just have to sample the street food at the busy markets, or dine at more upscale restaurants overlooking the ocean. One of our favourite things to do is indulging in high tea at one of the colonial-era hotels found in this beautiful part of the island.

Things to do and see in the West Coast

Negombo

This bustling, fishing town on the west coast of Sri Lanka (and close to the Bandaranaika International Airport), had a rather turbulent colonial history involving the Dutch, Portuguese and British due to the cinnamon trade. In fact, the wild cinnamon that grew in the region was described as ‘the very best in the universe as well as the most abundant’.

The remnants of this colonial period remain with the strong Catholic Church influence in the town. The Negombo Lagoon and the many canals offer superb birdwatching, the town’s Old Quarter is worth a visit, and the community is friendly and welcoming.

Colombo

Colombo, a commercial and tourist hub on the west coast of Sri Lanka. The vibrant canal city boasts golden beaches and a photogenic promenade, gorgeous temples, and chic restaurants among impressive skyscrapers.

Must-see attractions include the grand and atmospheric Asokaramaya Buddhist Temple, and Hindu Sri Ponnambalam Vanesar Kovil, known for its exquisite interiors. A historic Dutch quarter beckons to be explored - the Dutch Hospital and Dutch Period museum are quite fascinating, and the artisan colonnaded craft stores lend a special air to the area.

Nature lovers will enjoy walking through the beautiful Talangama Wetland which fringes the city or taking a short break from the city bustle in the Viharamahadevi Park, known for its delightful flowering trees and local snake charmers.

Mount Lavinia

Mount Lavinia is the perfect coastal town to relax on the golden beach, with palm trees and turquoise seas calling you in for a dip. One highlight of this town is the Railway Station, a beautifully preserved heritage site running along the coast.

There is nowhere better to enjoy fresh seafood than on Mount Lavinia's waterfront, where you can sit and enjoy the spectacular sunset.

Whether you're seeking relaxation, adventure, or cultural exploration, Mount Lavinia promises a memorable escape by the sea, where the beauty of nature meets the charm of colonial heritage.

Galle Face

This iconic promenade stretches for over half a kilometre, giving you the best views off the India Ocean and it is a popular gathering spot for locals and tourists alike.

Meander along the manicured lawns of Galle Face Green, here you can take a picnic and watch the world go by, enjoy local snacks and refreshing coconut water from local vendors. The promenade comes alive as the sun sets and people flock to witness the spectacular colours of the sky and cool breeze.

There are many food stalls lining the promenade, where you can savour authentic Sri Lankan street food and freshly grilled seafood while watching the waves crash against the shore.

Galle Face offers an unforgettable experience that captures the essence of coastal life in Colombo.
