Think of a classic African safari, and thoughts immediately turn to Kenya, and in particular to the Masai Mara National Reserve, known for its annual wildebeest migration. A game drive here will take you in search of the Big 5 – lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalo - as well as the myriad of other game and birdlife. But the “Mara” is not the only park in the country that is worth visiting.

Amboseli National Park offers visitors one of the most spectacular views of Tanzania's 5,895m Mt. Kilimanjaro, and is known for its herds of elephants, while Aberdare National Park, with the Aberdare Mountain Range as a backdrop, has a variety of habitats for the abundant wildlife and birdlife that call the park home. Other noteworthy national parks include Mount Kenya; Meru (described by the Kenyan Wildlife Services as “Complete Wilderness”); Mount Elgon (on the border with Uganda); and Tsavo East & West.

The Great Rift Valley, which runs through Kenya from north to south, plays host to diverse wildlife and panoramic geography. The valley floor contains a chain of volcanoes, some of which are still active, as well as a host of lakes, including Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha. Lake Nakuru National Park, widely regarded as a bird lover’s paradise, sees thousands of flamingos flock here every year to feed on the algae that live in the lake - head to Baboon Cliff for the best views over this pink phenomenon. Wildlife is also bountiful, with black and white rhinos, lions and leopards, among others. Lake Naivasha National Park, meanwhile, contains a similarly diverse array of wildlife. More than 400 species of birds have been seen in the vicinity, with plenty of land-based mammals as well.

Once the safari is over, head to the east coast for its beautiful white sand beaches, warm waters of the Indian Ocean, and fascinating historical sites.
