Things to do and see in The West 

Yellowstone National Park 

Located in the state of Wyoming, Yellowstone National Park is one of the most iconic wilderness areas in the world. Spanning over 2.2 million acres, this park is home to geothermal features, untouched natural beauty and abundant wildlife. 
 
One of the parks most famous features is the Old Faithful geyser where you can witness the awesome spectable of the geyser erupting approximately every 90 minutes, shooting boiling water into the air. 
 
Yellowstone hosts amazing wildlife such as grizzly bears, wolves, bison, elk and bighorn sheep which makes it the perfect destination for wildlife viewing and photography. 
 
Take a hike down popular trails including the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone to see waterfalls or the Lamar valley, known for spotting wildlife. 

San Francisco 

San Francisco's most famous landmark is the Golden Gate Bridge, you can walk, drive or bike across taking in the amazing views of the city skyline, infamous Alcatraz Island and the Pacific Ocean. Nearby the bridge there are gardens where you can relax, take a picnic and watch the world go by. 
 
Visit Fisherman's Wharf for seafood restaurants, souvenir shops and views, or Pier 39 for a lively marketplace, a sea lion colony and attractions like the Aquarium of the Bay. The Mission District is another popular neighbourhood full of colourful murals, boutique galleries and Mexican cuisine. 
 
With so much to see and do, San Francisco is one place you will never get bored. 

Malibu 

Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains, Malibu is known for pristine stretches of shores, celebrity homes and a laid-back coastal lifestyle. 
 
If you're a surfing pro or a humble beginner, head down to Surfrider Beach and Zuma Beach to catch world-class waves; for a more relaxing vibe, enjoy the soft sands of Paradise Cove and El Matador Beach. No matter what beach you chose to laze on you will have the opportunity to swim, paddleboard, kayak, play volleyball and so much more. 
 
If history is more your thing, visit the Getty Villa, in the Pacific Palisades, a stunning museum, home to Greek and Roman architechture, artefacts and antiquities.

Seattle 

Situated between Puget Sound and the snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Range, Seattle offers an unforgettable time. Spot the iconic Space Needle , an observation tower with panoramic views of the city, Elliott Bay and surrounding mountains - its a must-visit. 
 
You must also visit Pike Place Market, one of the oldest continuously operated public markets in the US, featuring fresh produce, artisanal goods and attractions such as Gum Wall! 
 
For the outdoor enthusiasts, there are plenty of parks and green spaces, including Discovery Park, Volunteer Park and Gas Works Park where you can hike, picnic, or cycle round. 
 
Seattle really is a unique experience filled with iconic landmaks, diverse cuisine and incredible views. 

Big Sur 

One of the most iconic features along the Big Sur is the Bixby Bridge which the best location for photos along this highway with the Pacific Ocean on one side and towering cliffs on the other. 
 
Sunbathe and relax on the purple sands of Pfeiffer Beach, or explore the coastal trails in Andrew Molera State Park while the wave crash dramatically onto the rocks nearby. Head over to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, home to the McWay Falls, and the Ewoldsen Trail with you can hike, camp and view the plethora of wildlife.  
 
Big Sur is sure to leave a lasting impression on you. 
 

Oregon 

If you're after an abundance of natural beauty, then Oregon is the place to be. With the rugged coastline of the Pacific Ocean to the untouched forests of the Cascade Range, Oregon is truly stunning. 
 
The Oregon Coast is dotted with picturesque seaside towns, sandy beaches and dramatic rocky cliffs, the perfect destination for whale-watching and beachcombing. Visit Cannon Beach, the charming town of Newport and Oregon Coast Aquarium to really see it all. 
 
For the craft beer fanatics, make a stop at the city of Bend in central Oregon or Portlan's Pearl District to stroll through the markets, listening to live music along the waterfront. 

Los Angeles 

LA is the second-largest city in the US and the largest city in California. It is a melting pot of culture and traditions. Perhaps most famous for being home to Hollywood, the epicentre of the American film and television industry with the Walk of Fame and the Hollywood sign being symbols of glamour. 
 
Its not all about Hollywood! Walk along the miles of sandy shoreline, busy boardwalks in Venice and Santa Monica. A visit to Beverly Hills is a must, with luxury shopping, fine dining and celebrity sightings along Rodeo Drive.  
 
Los Angeles is the essence of Southern California, with its diversity, attractions, iconic landmarks and year-round sunshine; you won't want to leave! 

Yosemite 

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Yosemite attracts millions of visitors each year to discover its granite cliffs, gorgeous waterfalls and ancient giant sequoia trees. 
 
For the adventurous among us, climb up El Capitan's sheer face or explore the valley floor on foot or by bike, or take a multiday back-packing trip to spot the wildlife living in Yosemite; this includes black bears, mule deer, coyotes and a variety of bird species. 
 
Yosemite is also home to gives of giant sequoia tree, the largest living organisms on Earth. The Mariposa Grove house 500 mature sequoias including the California Tunnel Tree. 

Best Time to Visit The West

Spring 
Spring is an excellent time to visit the West, particularly California, Yosemite and Joshua Tree. These destinations will have mild temperatures, perfect for outdoor activities and less crowds. Ski resorts are usually open til March/April also. 
 
Summer 
Summer is peak tourist season resulting in busy beaches and national parks, so be sure to plan ahead and make reservations. Regions like Seattle and Portland have mild temperatures and long days with plenty of festivals and events this time of year. 
 
Autumn 
Autumn is a beautiful time to visit the West as temperatures are cooling and the landscape take on the stunning autumn colours, especially in Colorado and Wyoming. National parks are less crowded during this time and also the wine regions celebrate there harvest season with festivals, tours of the vineyards and wine tastings. 
 
Winter 
Winter is the perfect time to visit the ski resorts in the West, like Lake Tahoe, Aspen and Jackson Hole. Desert destinations like Palm Springs have more milder temperatures and the national parks are less crowded in the winter.
