Luxury Tailor-Made South Africa Holidays The Drakensberg 2024 & 2025

Legends of the Dragon Mountains

Meaning Dragon Mountains in Afrikaans, the Drakensberg mountain range is a majestic natural border between South Africa and Lesotho and it is renowned for its towering peaks, deep valleys and cascading waterfalls.

The Drakensberg is, of course, a popular hiking spot. In the mountains, you will find plenty of trails of different difficulty levels which you can explore by foot, horseback or take a 4x4 along the Sani Pass into Lesotho. Look out for the little hidden caves where you can find rock-art that is over 2,000 years old!

The Drakensburg lies just three hours northwest of Durban, with its towering wall of making a great first impression! But its not all daunting - these mountains are cloaked in a carpet of grass and mossy forests, abundant in life. As you venture through the valleys and peaks, you'll discover streams, eland and some of the 300 bird species that inhabit the area, including the Cape vulture.

If you're after breath-taking scenery and crisp mountain air, then hiking is the ideal choice. Head over to Giant's Castle, where you can tackle the trails independently or join a local guide. These guides have intimate knowledge of the terrain and can tailor the hike to suit your preferences and energy levels.

Another fantastic spot for hiking is found within the Royal Natal National Park, known as the Amphitheatre. This impressive natural formation spans 3 miles and features the Tugela River. Here you'll get to see the breath-taking site of the Tugela Falls, water plummeting 1,640 feet down the valley.

The lodges scattered throughout the Drakensberg region offer a range of outdoor activities to suit all preferences. From leisurely guided horse riding to to trout fishing to white water rafting - there's something for everyone.

Exploring this landscape, you can't help but feel its timelessness. For thousands of years, it has captured the imagination of humans, including the San People, indigenous hunter-gatherers who once roamed these lands. Guided trips are available to explore the rock paintings left behind, adorning the walls of caves throughout the area.
