At 280,000-odd square kilometres, Ecuador is a small country by South American standards, but it manages to pack 47 volcanoes, a fistful of charming cities, incredible wildlife and much more besides within its boundaries, making it a great choice for a tailored South America holiday. The capital Quito, lying almost on the equator from which the country takes its name, has a beautiful colonial centre and a maze of colourful streets and squares in which you’re as likely to hear one of the countless indigenous languages like Spanish. To the west lies the commercial capital Guayaquil, along with beautiful Pacific beaches; to the east, a sizeable portion of the Amazon rainforest. You can see why, in some respects, we see Ecuador as South America in microcosm. Ecuador is noted as one of the world’s megadiverse countries, meaning that if you explore its cloud forest, canyons and hot springs with us, you’ll experience a dazzling array of creatures, maybe including the mighty Andean condor. And speaking of nature, Ecuador (along with Peru and Chile) mixes particularly well with a trip to the Galápagos Islands. Whether or not wildlife is your bag, we think you’ll be wild about Ecuador – and we’d be delighted to show you why.
