Kandy 2025 & 2026 

Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, is steeped in history and rich cultural heritage. Located in the heart of the island, it was once the seat of the Kandyan Kingdom, which resisted British colonial rule until it was eventually ceded in 1815. The city’s most prominent historical site is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which houses the tooth of the Buddha and has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries. The temple not only represents the spiritual heart of Kandy but also symbolizes the authority of the kings who ruled the region. The Kandy Esala Perahera, an annual festival, celebrates this sacred relic and is one of the oldest and grandest religious processions in Sri Lanka. 

 

Kandy’s significance extends beyond its religious importance. The city and surrounding region were key centres of resistance against British colonial forces in the 19th century. The Kandyan Kingdom maintained independence for centuries, utilizing its strategic location among the hills to protect itself from foreign invaders. The city’s layout and architecture, such as the Royal Palace and Kandy Lake, reflect the grandeur of the era. Today, Kandy remains a living testament to Sri Lanka’s regal past, blending colonial and traditional influences, and offers visitors a unique glimpse into the island’s rich history and cultural evolution. 

One of Sri Lanka’s most revered Buddhist sites, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic houses a sacred tooth relic of the Buddha. The temple complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important pilgrimage destination. Visitors can witness daily rituals, beautifully adorned shrines, and intricate Kandyan architecture, all while experiencing the deep spiritual significance of the temple. 

Located just outside Kandy, the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya are a paradise for nature lovers. Spanning 147 acres, these gardens feature an impressive collection of over 4,000 species of plants, including towering royal palms, vibrant orchids, and ancient fig trees. The gardens, once reserved for Kandyan royalty, are now a popular attraction for leisurely walks and picnics in a breath-taking setting. 

Located about an hour's drive from Kandy, Ramboda Falls is one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful waterfalls, cascading down in multiple tiers through lush greenery. The 109-meter-high waterfall is surrounded by tea plantations and misty hills, making it a perfect stop for nature lovers and photographers. Visitors can take in the views from various vantage points or hike down to the base for a closer experience of the falls' refreshing spray. 

Nestled in the heart of the city, Kandy Lake, also known as "Kiri Muhuda" (Sea of Milk), is a serene spot for a leisurely walk or boat ride. The man-made lake was built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe and is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a peaceful retreat amidst the bustling city. A stroll along the shaded pathways offers stunning views of the Temple of the Tooth and distant hills.
