Ella 2025 & 2026 

Ella, nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka's hill country, is a charming town with a rich history that dates back to the British colonial era. Originally known for its strategic location as a rest stop for travellers heading to the central highlands, Ella became an important point during the British tea plantation era. The British established several tea estates in the surrounding hills, and Ella's cool climate and scenic vistas made it a perfect retreat for colonial planters seeking a respite from the tropical heat of the lowlands. 

 

Historically, Ella also played a role in Sri Lanka's struggle for independence. During the 20th century, the town became a symbol of the evolving cultural identity of the island, blending colonial influences with Sri Lankan heritage. Over time, the area developed a unique character, with a growing community of locals engaged in agriculture, tea cultivation, and later tourism. Today, Ella is not only a hub for its picturesque landscapes but also a place where Sri Lanka’s cultural history and the influence of its colonial past coexist. 

The Nine Arches Bridge, also known as the 'Bridge in the Sky,' is a stunning colonial-era viaduct located just outside Ella. This beautiful structure, with its towering arches, is surrounded by lush green vegetation and offers an excellent opportunity for a photo. It's also a popular spot for tourists to wait for passing trains, which make for a picturesque sight crossing over the bridge. 

Ravana Falls is one of the widest and most famous waterfalls in Sri Lanka, standing at about 25 meters tall. It's a popular stop for travellers passing through Ella. The waterfall is associated with the legendary figure Ravana from the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana. The falls are surrounded by tropical vegetation, making it a great spot for a scenic walk and a refreshing swim.
