Mostly known for Kolkata and Darjeeling, this part of India is amazingly diverse and is a different world.

The region has Himalayan massifs, colonial architecture & history, mangroves, man-eating tigers, tribal hinterland, white sandy beaches, tea gardens & the famous mountain railway.

Kolkata in the state of West Bengal has always dominated the scene in this part of the country as it was the former capital of British Raj. The city still retains its colonial character and a vibrant atmosphere. From here, it is an easy access to the Himalayan states and especially the hill station of Darjeeling.

With colourful monasteries, tea plantations, views of snow-clad peaks and the affectionate ‘Toy Train’, Darjeeling is a welcome change from the city life. Continuing from here is the charming Himalayan state of Sikkim which has some of the best and most uninterrupted views of the Himalayan peaks including Mt Kanchenjunga.

The other seven sister states house the tea plantation and single Horned rhinos of Assam, ancient head-hunter tribes of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, where high mountain passes give way to remote Buddhist monasteries.

From the Himalaya down to the Ganges one can travel through the Gangetic plains for the Buddhist pilgrimage and visit Bodhgaya where Buddha attained enlightenment.

From Kolkata travel southwards where Orissan architecture never fails to amaze the visitor with its awe-inspiring temples at Puri & Konark. For the more adventurous, travel the tribal heartland deep into Orissa, this really is a must. After a tiring tour in the east, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands with their azure waters and pristine beaches make for a compelling destination.
