Combining Vietnam's most iconic highlights with authentic local experiences, this carefully crafted itinerary offers the ultimate introduction to a country that is as beautiful as it is captivating.
day 1-3 Hanoi
Your Vietnam adventure begins in Hanoi, where you will be greeted by a Tailored Journeys representative and transferred to the iconic Sofitel Legend Metropole. One of our favourite hotels in Vietnam, its central location provides the perfect base from which to explore the capital's fascinating blend of history, culture and modern life.
During your stay, discover the highlights of Hanoi alongside your private guide. Visit important landmarks including Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, House and Cottage, the One Pillar Pagoda, Temple of Literature and Quan Thanh Pagoda, each offering an insight into Vietnam's rich heritage.
Explore Hanoi's famous Old Quarter, whose history spans more than 2,000 years. Once an alligator-infested swamp and later home to generations of craftsmen, it has evolved into a bustling district often described as the eternal soul of Hanoi. Its lively streets, hidden alleyways and vibrant atmosphere provide a wonderful introduction to Vietnam.
You will also venture beyond the city to explore the surrounding countryside. Visit Co Loa, Vietnam's ancient capital during the 10th century, where the remains of a 3rd-century BC citadel still stand today. Continue to the village of Bat Trang, renowned throughout the country for its centuries-old ceramic traditions and skilled artisans.
Accommodation: Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi
day 4 Halong Bay
Leave the city behind and journey to the spectacular waters of Halong Bay, one of Vietnam's most iconic natural wonders.
Board your traditional junk boat and cruise amongst a breathtaking seascape of limestone islands and emerald waters. Home to almost 2,000 islands and islets, many untouched and uninhabited, Halong Bay's dramatic scenery earned UNESCO World Heritage status and remains one of the highlights of any journey through Vietnam.
Freshly prepared seafood meals will be served onboard as you sail through this remarkable landscape. As evening falls, relax on deck and perhaps try your hand at traditional night fishing whilst surrounded by the tranquillity of the bay.
Accommodation: Violet Heritage Line
day 5-6 Hue
Following your overnight cruise, continue south to Hue, the former Imperial capital of Vietnam and one of the country's most culturally significant cities.
Set on the banks of the Perfume River, Hue combines grand imperial history with a peaceful atmosphere. During your stay, discover the imposing Imperial Citadel and the beautiful Thien Mu Pagoda, both of which played an important role in Vietnam's history.
Your accommodation is equally special, occupying the former French Colonial Governor's residence. Beautifully restored and overlooking both the Perfume River and the former Imperial Citadel, it offers one of the most atmospheric stays in the city.
You will also visit two of the most impressive royal tombs built by the Nguyen Emperors. The elegant Tomb of Tu Duc, set amongst tranquil gardens and lotus-filled lakes, contrasts beautifully with the striking architecture of the Tomb of Khai Dinh.
Accommodation: Azerai La Residence Hue
day 7-11 Hoi An
Travel south via the spectacular Hai Van Pass, made famous by Top Gear, arriving in the charming riverside town of Hoi An.
With its lantern-lit streets, colourful architecture and relaxed pace of life, Hoi An is one of Vietnam's most enchanting destinations. Once a thriving trading port connecting merchants from across Asia and Europe, the town remains remarkably well-preserved and is now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Spend your time exploring the atmospheric Old Town, discovering its blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and French influences. Highlights include the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge, traditional Chinese communal houses and the historic Tan Ky House.
A lantern-making workshop offers the opportunity to learn one of Hoi An's most famous traditional crafts, with your handmade lantern providing a wonderful souvenir to take home.
There will also be plenty of time to relax and enjoy the town's riverside charm. Enjoy leisurely lunches overlooking the water, browse local galleries and boutiques, and round off one evening with a peaceful sunset cruise along the Thu Bon River.
Accommodation: Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort & Spa
day 12-15 Ho Chi Minh City
Your final stop is Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's energetic southern metropolis where modern skyscrapers stand alongside colonial architecture and bustling local markets.
Upon arrival, transfer to the elegant Park Hyatt Saigon, perfectly located in the heart of the city and within walking distance of many of its most famous landmarks including the Central Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Opera House.
During your stay, gain a fascinating insight into Vietnam's recent history with a visit to the extraordinary Cu Chi Tunnels. Stretching for almost 250 kilometres, this vast underground network once provided shelter and support for thousands of Viet Cong soldiers.
You will also journey into the lush Mekong Delta, often referred to as Vietnam's "Green Venice". Cruise along the waterways of Ben Tre, visiting traditional workshops and learning about local industries that continue to shape life in this fertile region.
For a memorable finale to your Vietnamese adventure, explore Ho Chi Minh City after dark from the back of a vintage Vespa. Discover hidden corners of the city, sample local flavours and experience the vibrant energy that makes modern-day Saigon so captivating.
