Zimbabwe, South Africa’s northern neighbour, may be landlocked, but two of its most spectacular sights are of the watery kind.
Now, its calm waters lure wildlife such as hippo, rhino and buffalo for hundreds of miles, while skeletal trees stand midwater silhouetted against the sunset.
The Zambezi has much to draw the visitor. One day, take a cruise, binoculars at the ready for sightings of big game; the next, opt for a more adrenaline-fuelled experience: try your hand at white-water-rafting. And this country is, of course, a safari-goer’s paradise, from Hwange National Park, famed for its elephant, buffalo and sable herds, to Mana Pools in the Great Rift Valley, to Matobo, with its granite hills and ancient rock art forming the backdrop for sightings of black and white rhino. Visit the Great Zimbabwe National Monument, a ruined city from the country’s iron age that’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or just look out from the stone-clad hills known as kopjes, spot cheetah, lion or zebra, and fall in love with this corner of Africa.
