Okavango Delta
Situated in the north-western corner of Botswana, the Okavango Delta, listed as a World Heritage Site, is the largest inland delta in the world. Fed from the mountains in Angola, the magnificent Okavango River sprawls out over the dry sands of the Kalahari Desert forming a flourishing waterlogged oasis featuring countless meandering waterways and crystal clear lagoons studded with water lilies, as well as fertile floodplains and reeded islands inhabited with abundant wildlife.
A number of wonderful activities are on offer here, such as game viewing, fishing, bird watching or taking an authentic guided Mokoro excursion through this wetland paradise in a traditional dugout canoe. Commonly spotted animals include: lion, rhino, leopard, giraffe, hippos, elephants, crocodiles and countless species of bird.
Dry season (April – October). Among the best game viewing anywhere in Africa, particularly when the Delta floods, with water levels typically at their best between June and September. Most camps will be able to offer an exciting mix of both land and water based game activities.
Wet season (November - April). As water levels recede many of the camps will switch to land based activities only, however a few camps along the deeper channels are still able to offer year round water based activities. Already a year round paradise for many bird species, the Delta now sees the arrival of enormous flocks of migratory species and many mammals can be seen birthing their young or nursing their infants.
