Kalahari Desert
This semi-arid desert habitat sustains a surprising number of animals, many of them desert adapted sub-species of the safari favourites, such as black-maned lion or desert elephants. In the dry season water is sparse and the land unforgiving, while the green season brings migratory species and temporary respite from the scarcity of food and water. There’s no better display of the battle for survival in the animal kingdom than in the Kalahari.
Dry season (April – October) Wildlife viewing is excellent as the lack of water concentrates animals around the few active waterholes, though many migratory birds have fled.
Wet season (November – March) Migratory birds as well as some mammals return as the rains bring the land back to life. The Deception Valley area in particular is an excellent hub to view large gatherings and many species birth their young in this season. Rain fall is short lived and generally light, making the Kalahari a true year round destination.
