AfriKids

Throughout Tailored Journeys’ portfolio in Africa, there is a common theme of giving back. We regularly offer non-profit and community run safari lodges. These lodges and the revenue they produce provide employment opportunities and improved education and healthcare in areas that need it most. And the conservation efforts our partners are engaged in are helping to preserve and regenerate important ecosystems and protect endangered wildlife for the next generation.

However, most of these projects benefit the more popular safari hot spots in Southern and East Africa. AfriKids focus is Ghana where income from tourism is growing but still comparatively low and little benefit can be felt in rural communities. We have chosen to work with AfriKids as we believe in helping the next generation in West Africa. Their thoughtful approach is designed to do just that whilst considering individual community’s needs and traditions. In their own words...
Tomorrow’s leaders are not learning

By 2050, 40% of the world’s children will be African. And right now, nearly 9 in 10 children in Sub Saharan Africa are not learning – unable to read a simple text by age 10.

In northern Ghana where AfriKids is rooted, the crisis is critical. Seven in 10 families live in multi-dimensional poverty and the impacts of climate change are taking effect and threatening livelihoods. As a result, 1 in 4 children are not in school. Across the region, half of all women and girls have never been to school.

A world where all children can learn

Global studies have shown that if all women completed just primary education, child mortality would drop by a sixth, maternal death would be cut by two thirds, and a single year of primary school increases future earnings by 5-15% for boys and 10-20% for girls.

Ensuring education for Africa’s children – equipping them to break the cycle of poverty and help tackle global issues like climate change, social inequality and conflict - is not only the right thing to do, but critical to the future of humanity.

Unlocking the power of local communities

We believe in the power of local communities to create deep and lasting change for children. Our ‘Means, Motive, Opportunity’ model helps communities turn challenges into opportunities:

• Ensure means: Help communities prioritise and manage the costs of education
• Build motive: Foster community understanding, faith and commitment to education
• Create opportunity: Help communities drive and demand improvements to the quality education.

Meet our Africa Expert - Elliot

Shortly after joining the travel industry in 2013, Elliot had his first taste of Africa, with an unforgettable safari in Tanzania. The raw, untamed wildness and unique beauty had him hooked from day one. He has since explored a dozen African countries in depth, mostly in Southern and East Africa. Elliot proposed to his wife in Botswana and they honeymooned in Uganda.
